On Thursday night (August 21st) at approximately 11:15 pm EST, I witnessed a baby sea turtle hatching on North Topsail Island beach. The natural nest began to show signs of hatching about an hour or so before the little turtles appeared on the sand. One little turtle came out first and I was so excited to see him that seeing the one would have been enough, but right after he appeared, his siblings poured out onto the beach and headed toward the ocean. I lost count after 50 and my best guess would be that about 100 hatched.

I don’t have any pictures of the hatching because they come out at night (to avoid being seen by predators) and because they go toward the light (usually the moon) so flash would disorient them and send them in the wrong direction. It’s one of those things that you just have to see with your own eyes. ^^

I will update the details on how many turtles I saw hatch when the results are posted by the sea turtle people. A litter of sea turtles is called a clutch.

I am once again at the North Carolina beach for our annual family vacation. I got up to watch the sunrise this morning; it was hazy from overnight thunderstorms, but still a sight to see.

Usually we go in July, but this year we are here in August, so this is our first year being here during the baby sea turtle hatching! You can check out the Sea Turtle Hospital website where they are monitoring all the turtle activity. I’ll post more pictures if I catch the baby turtles this week. ^^

Wow. Did anyone watch the opening ceremony for the Olympics? I caught the middle of the night encore and I am totally in awe of the show the Chinese put on. The drums were amazing and then they made a giant painting, but instead of using brushes they used dancing people. The lights and fireworks alone make me want to jump on a plane and head to Beijing. My passport is feeling a little lonely…it’s been almost a year since my last great Asian vacation (has it really been that long!?)…and I haven’t been to China…yet. (^-^)
